What Is Selank? The Tuftsin-Based Peptide Explained
Selank (sometimes misspelt selnak) is a seven-amino-acid peptide built from tuftsin, an immune peptide, with a protective tail. It was registered in Russia in 2009. Here is what it is and how it compares with Semax.
Selank in brief
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (seven amino acids). Its first four amino acids are tuftsin, a natural immune peptide, and the last three are the Pro-Gly-Pro tail that also protects Semax. It was developed in Russia and registered there as a medicine in 2009. It is sometimes misspelt "selnak".

What is tuftsin?
Tuftsin is a four-amino-acid peptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) released from part of the antibody IgG. It was described in 1970 and acts on immune cells, stimulating phagocytosis. On its own it breaks down very quickly, which is why Selank adds the Pro-Gly-Pro tail.
| Part | Amino acids | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Tuftsin | Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg | Immune-derived active sequence |
| Tail | Pro-Gly-Pro | Slows enzyme breakdown |
What researchers study
- Anxiety-related behaviour: rodent models of stress and anxiety.
- GABA signalling: effects on GABA-related gene expression and receptors.
- Enkephalins: slowing the enzymes that break down enkephalins, the body's own opioid peptides.
- Immune markers: effects on cytokines, reflecting its tuftsin origin.
Selank vs Semax
| Selank | Semax | |
|---|---|---|
| Parent | Tuftsin (immune) | ACTH fragment |
| Research focus | Anxiety and stress models | Cognition and neuroprotection |
| Length | 7 | 7 |
